Gardner alerts readers as well to the pleasures of its "colorful style. Appraising the book's many intriguing philosophical qualities, Mr. Martin Gardner's superb introduction to The Ball and the Cross reveals the real-life debate between Chesterton and a famous atheist that provided inspiration for the story, and it explores some of the novel's possible allegorical meanings. Their fanatically held opinions-leading to a duel that is proposed but never fought-inspire a host of comic adventures whose allegorical levels vigorously explore the debate between theism and atheism. The plot of The Ball and the Cross chronicles a hot dispute between two Scotsmen, one a devout but naive Roman Catholic, the other a zealous but naive atheist. Serialized in the British publication The Commonwealth in 1905-06, Chesterton's second novel first appeared in book form in America in 1909, delighting and challenging readers with its heady mixture of fantasy, farce, and theology. Chesterton's fiction, The Ball and the Cross is both witty and profound, cloaking serious religious and philosophical inquiry in sparkling humor and whimsy.

Firestone maintains that all wars are really puzzles, and the victors are the ones who get to pronounce their solutions. References to pop culture, Nabokov and the Beatles and Humphrey Bogart included, are viable means to such an engagement. This kind of engagement is particularly relevant, I think, to those of us who are dissatisfied with the dominant narratives in Western media describing (it would be more accurate to say "purporting to describe") the aims of Islam and Muslims. Nabokov awoke this kind of fury, and he also got people to think - surely a positive development. So it's good to write a book that calls attention to its own mechanisms, questions those mechanisms, and thus makes readers engaged, or even angry, participants in the story, rather than passive consumers. Readers eager to remain unaware of how storytelling works are unlikely to challenge storytelling when it is used (as it often is) to further interests that are foreign or detrimental to their own. Featuring the eccentric doctor who learns to talk to animals, the novel has been adapted as a major film starring Robert Downey Jr., Emma Thompson and Selena Gomez. Hugh Lofting's The Story of Doctor Dolittle is one of the most fun, delightful and imaginative stories in children's literature. The doctor's animal friends are quick to tell him that the monkeys in Africa have become infected with a terrible disease, so with a team of trusty creatures by his side the kind-hearted doctor sets off on an action-packed adventure to save them. A team of 12 astronauts with various backgrounds and specialties board the craft, only to discover a traitor among them and an unforeseen cataclysm that strands three of them on board as the ship leaves the solar system. Now, humanity has prepared for the arrival of a second alien spacecraft, determined to unlock its secrets. In Rama II, many years have passed since the unexpected Rama spacecraft passed through Earth’s solar system and was boarded for a time by intrepid humans. Though it is a sequel to Clarke’s critically-acclaimed 1973 solo novel Rendezvous with Rama, about humanity’s first encounter with an alien spacecraft, Rama II is the foundation of several subsequent novels that build on the universe presented in these stories far more than in the original. Why is it unique? Besides being co-written by his well-known collaborator on certain books, Gentry Lee, this novel is a sequel that many have said can stand on its own. However, there is one book that is a bit unique among his works, the 1989 novel Rama II by Arthur C. Clarke, and with the volume of literature that he wrote in his lifetime, it can be a daunting task to choose a novel of his to read. There are few names in science fiction literature that are more recognizable than the late Arthur C. He had the guile and charm of the savviest operator and the instincts of a political predator. “I am the master here,” Lincoln says with a wry, wolfish grin as he walks one of his vanquished guests toward the door.īold, clever, and in command - meet Gore Vidal’s Lincoln. It was a political masterstroke that neither Chase nor the senators ever saw coming and a hit so well-sprung that it sunk whatever intra-party putsch the conspirators had cooking. Lincoln saw through the scheme and ended Chase’s presidential bid by making a fool of the former governor and all his friends at a carefully orchestrated Cabinet meeting. For weeks Chase had been duplicitously back-channeling with his friends in the Senate, setting in motion his own plan to unseat Lincoln and run for president as the Republican nominee in 1864. ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH his 1984 novel Lincoln, Gore Vidal has the notoriously long-legged and honest US president spring an all-timer of a trap. Photography by Nic BishopIs Lisa a winged wierdo? A psycho-parrot? No, everything she’s doing is perfectly normal-for a kakapo (KAR-ka-poe), that is. She’ll sleep hidden from view during the day. Tonight, she’ll thrash noisily through the underbrush in the dark, looking for food. Even though her wings are healthy, she can’t fly. Does she take off and soar from tree to tree? No-this bird travels only on foot. Reaching the surface, she begins her nightly explorations of the forest. No, despite the late hour, this huge, soft, moss-green bird, looking somewhat like a parakeet who has eaten one side of the mushroom in Alice in Wonderland and grown into an eight-pound giant, decides this is a great time to waddle out of her nest-a nest that’s not in a tree, like a normal parrot’s, but underground. You’d think any self-respecting parrot would be asleep. Chapter 1: The Strangest Parrot in the World There was a lot of historical and technical data in this book about battles and guns and politics and such. I also wonder if I had a subconscious moral dilemma about how I should feel toward Russian soldiers. I still like Quinn’s The Rose Code better than Diamond Eye because of its more suspenseful story line, but I still enjoyed this one. Though her gender kept her from the military decorations awarded to other soldiers, her official kill count tallied at over 300 and her skill and heroism was never questioned by her fellow soldiers. She will show her son strength and courage. When the call comes for soldiers, she hones her shooting skills and becomes a sniper. Slavka’s father is absent and disinterested in their life so Mila is determined to be both mother and father to her son. Mila is driven by her love for her son, Slavka. The Diamond Eye is the fictionalized-true story of Mila Pavlichenko, female sniper in the Russian army. What drives a woman to become a sniper in WWII? That’s the version of my two weeks’ notice I should’ve sent to my boss, because the more professional version - the one where I said I was "grateful for all the opportunities," and "honored by all the rewarding experiences" over the years? I wish his next executive assistant all the luck in the world (she'll need it) and if my boss should need me to do anything over the next two weeks, kindly tell him that he can do it goddamn self. This was a VERY EASY decision to make, as the past two years have been utterly miserable. I am writing this letter to formally announce my resignation from Parker International (& the arrogant, condescending CEO) effective two weeks from today. |
